We are live!

The live stream cameras are now good to go.
We will continue to stream for 12hrs so there will be two 12 hour streams per /day/camera, like last year. There will be a day stream and evening/night (with infrared) stream.

Live stream for 2023 update

Just a quick one to give everyone an update on the live stream for 2023.

All the equipment has been installed, and is currently going through some fine tuning and stability testing. We hope to have it up and running on YouTube live by next week.

As a reminder 5F (Seren) arrived here last year on the 26th of March, so I expect her to be back around that date give or take a few days. Someone is actually going to check on her last seen location in Gambia this week, ofcourse she may not be there, but its worth checking. Dylan our breeding male was here on the 5th of April last year and was later that usual. But again I expect him back end of March early April again. This is all very much weather dependent, with favourable winds.

As a bit of a teaser here is a clip I made of a buzzard landing on the nest, this week.

Seren 5F has been sighted in The Gambia!

This morning I randomly came across a post on the Rutland Osprey Facebook page. It was a back of the camera picture of an osprey sat on a pole. The poster said it was 5F. I had to do a double take, almost scrolled past it. Checked it was actually a current post and not something from last year that had been revisited with a stray comment as that sometimes happens on Facebook..

Nope it was only posted (at the time) 30 odd minutes ago. I filled the photographer in with the info and history of 5F. I quickly messaged Chris Wood who I knew was out in The Gambia too in the hope he had time to go and see her. Luckily he did get word and went out in the afternoon and found on the same pole the other photographer seen her. 5F even gave a close fly past for Chris which would of been great for him to have seen her.

Since she has been breeding here at Llyn Clywedog she hasn’t been seen in her usual places, so it was good to finally add another location to the list of known hideaways she uses. As you can see in Chris’s photos you can see she is in good health which is great to see. It won’t be long now and she will be back here in Mid Wales!

Another successful year

Its been a great year for Ospreys in Wales, the pair numbers have increased again, since last year. Now known to be 7 pairs breeding in Wales. These pairs have produced 17 chicks this year. That means just from the active nest there was atleast 31 ospreys flying around in Wales, not including the unattached birds, of that there is atleast 5 Llyn Clywedog returnees, KS7,8 and KA7, 550, 551. We sadly have lost KA3 Hesgyn from the Dyfi a young male from 2019.

About the Llyn Clywedog returnees, I had some amazing news the other day from Dr Tim Mackrill, about one of our 2019 youngsters being sighted in Blithfield reservoir, Staffordshire. KA6 had been seen fishing in the reservoir on the 23rd of August. This is the first known recorded sighting of her since she left us in 2019. There is a good possibility that she has nested up in the area, with possibly a Rutland Male 2AM who is regularly seen fishing there. Our return rate has been really good having two from each year consecutively, 2018 – 2020. Next year we only have the chance of seeing one youngster return so the odds are Stacked against it, but fingers crossed that 496 is a surviver.

553 and 555 have not been seen since the early hours of the 25th of August 2022. Its very likely they have now set off on their long journey. 554 was last seen at 12pm on the 27th of August, and also is likely to have set off too. Both Seren 5F and Dylan are still here, perhaps enjoying the peace and quiet now that their young have left. Hopefully getting ready for their long journeys too.

Stats from the nest upto date.

I always find it difficult to adjust to the empty nest and quiet skies in the first few days, weeks after they leave. But it isn’t long until they start to come back and all the excitement starts again. I will be starting to plan the winter work which include looking to build a few more osprey platforms in Mid Wales, and ofcourse getting everything ready on the main nest for next year. Thank you all for following along again and I look forward to seeing what 2023 brings us.
